Suturing in implantology for beginners part 4: knots

After dental implant installation, here comes the stage of wound stitching. As we discussed earlier there are several types of suture material, needles and types of sutures that can be applied after dental implantation. However, the knot that is used to fix the wound is also important.

Please remember to tie a knot only with dental instruments. The „square site“ is most popular know when dealing with gum tissue. It is made with two simple knots made in different directions. You can use this knot with silk suture material in cases where there is no tissue tension.

Some clinical cases require surgical knot. This is a modification of „square knot“. This is very strong know that is usually used in case that require gun tissue fixation.

In addition, after dental implantation the slippery knot can be used. This is another kind of square knot. To do it the dentists should tie two knots in one direction. This type of knot is often used for ligating of blood vessels or for fixation of movable mucosa edges.

When tightening the knots you should remember these simple secrets:

– The surgical and square knots can be improved by additional plies

– For better stability of slippery knot made with monofilament thread you can make some extra plies

You should remove the sutures after 7-10 days, then it can result in  suture epithelization and imbue with blood and tissue fluid.

Remember suture is very important issue after the dental implant placement because it protects the implant and tissue from infection.
